Abstract/Summary

Marineplasticdebrisfloatingontheoceansurfaceisamajorenvironmentalproblem.However,its distributionintheoceanispoorlymapped,andmostoftheplasticwasteestimatedtohaveenteredthe oceanfromlandisunaccountedfor.Betterunderstandingofhowplasticdebrisistransportedfrom coastalandmarinesourcesiscrucialtoquantifyandclosetheglobalinventoryofmarineplastics, whichinturnrepresentscriticalinformationformitigationorpolicystrategies.Atthesametime, plasticisauniquetracerthatprovidesanopportunitytolearnmoreaboutthephysicsanddynamicsof ouroceanacrossmultiplescales,fromtheEkmanconvergenceinbasin-scalegyrestoindividualwaves inthesurfzone.Inthisreview,wecomprehensivelydiscusswhatisknownaboutthedifferent processesthatgovernthetransportoffloatingmarineplasticdebrisinboththeopenoceanandthe coastalzones,basedonthepublishedliteratureandreferringtoinsightsfromneighbouringfieldssuch asoilspilldispersion,marinesafetyrecovery,planktonconnectivity,andothers.Wediscusshow measurementsofmarineplastics(bothinsituandinthelaboratory),remotesensing,andnumerical simulationscanelucidatetheseprocessesandtheirinteractionsacrossspatio-temporalscales.
